Maratona com Arte Logo

In 2025, more than 85% of the 60,000 athletes registered for the Rio Marathon come from outside the state of Rio de Janeiro. The theme of the 23rd edition of Mara do Rio and Maratona com Arte highlights diversity: Brazil runs to Rio — once again. We will put our history, our paths, and our people on the asphalt in their richest mix of accents, beliefs, and dreams.

Maratona com Arte is a project that celebrates art and sport throughout the city.

The first stop of Maratona com Arte will be on June 14! Just 4 days before the 23rd edition of the Rio Marathon, we will energize Rio de Janeiro with a tribute to one of the greatest names in Brazilian sports history, athlete Adhemar Ferreira.

Urban art and street running will meet once again! While muralist Cazé, from Negro Muro, finishes the work on the facade of Escola Municipal João de Camargo, we will take all the energy of Mara do Rio in a run with the crew. At the installation, we will have the explanation of the work with a descriptive audio.

The Maratona com Arte project also brings a graffiti workshop and shows to the Maratona com Arte stage at the Esplanade of Marina da Glória, during the festival.

"I found the word ‘athlete’ beautiful and decided I wanted to be one."

— Adhemar Ferreira

Since 2018, muralist Cazé and producer/researcher Pedro Rajão have been transforming the city’s walls into true memory panels. Through urban art, the duo dedicates themselves to rescuing and valuing Black history in Brazil, portraying historical figures in large murals across public spaces.

Among the locations that have received their works are important heritage sites such as the Museum of Image and Sound (MIS-RJ), the administrative building of Theatro Municipal, the Museum of Afro-Brazilian Culture and History (MUHCAB), and the last residence of Black Admiral João Cândido.

They also left their mark in symbolic places such as São Januário Stadium and the samba school courts of Império Serrano, Caprichosos de Pilares, and Arranco do Engenho de Dentro, as well as seven municipal schools.

With art, color, and history, Cazé and Pedro Rajão continue mapping and giving visibility to Brazilian Black memory.

Maratona com Arte doesn’t stop here!

The post-race experience for Rio Marathon runners will be even more lively and unforgettable with free, public attractions at the Village Maratona (Marina da Glória, Aterro do Flamengo).

After all, it’s always much more than just the race, right? 😃
